The Reuters news agency quoting a source from the Virunga National Park said the convoy was attacked during a kidnap attempt near the town of Kanyamahoro at around 10.15 am local time (8.15 am GMT). The park had said earlier that two people in the convoy had been killed and the 43-year-old ambassador wounded.
It was not immediately clear who was behind the attack. There was no immediate claim of responsibility. Italian newspaper La Repubblica said Virunga rangers immediately launched an operation to free him but he was found dead. His body was taken to the hospital in Goma.
