Ginger Reiter lost power in her house when Jackie Mason blew into her life.
About that, Reiter has some advice: “Don’t ever fall in love with a fallen star.”
She says this even though that is exactly what she did one night in 1977 at a place called — you can’t make this stuff up — Wolfie Cohen’s Rascal House Restaurant north of Miami.
She and Jackie Mason fell in love. They fell into bed. And in 1985 a baby girl was born.” He was kind of down and out but he had been a big star and still had a lot of charisma,” said Reiter on the phone from her home in Boca Raton.
He also inspired her to write and star in a play about their relationship two years before their baby was born.
By then the pair’s relationship had been steady if more than a bit unusual.
Reiter was 26 when she met the comic.
She had just moved to Florida from New Jersey and was pursuing a graduate degree at the University of Miami. “He would leave some of his suits and ties in my closet,” Reiter says.
“But little did I know that there were women all over Miami Beach with his suits and ties in their closets.”
Then, on Dec. 15, 1985, Ginger gave birth to a baby she named Sheba Halley Mason.

The comic did not want a baby or a wife.
“He had always made that clear,” says Reiter. “But he called all during the pregnancy and sent money. And after Sheba was born when he would see her, he really acted the part of doting father.”
In public, though, he would not admit he was a father.
That mildly irritated Reiter as she then watched Mason stage what would be one of the most remarkable comebacks in showbiz history when his one-man show titled “The World According to Me!” became a huge hit in 1986.
Reiter had been receiving $750 a month from Mason but thought his newfound success dictated more. She asked for $1,500. He refused and, according to Ginger, stopped sending any money.
“He got big and he got icy cold,” she says.
By 1988, she had had enough and in Florida’s Dade County, sued him for paternity.
He slapped her with a libel lawsuit. But he was forced to take a blood test.
It showed a 99.94 percent chance that he was Sheba’s father. Still, he refused to pay child support. Reiter was evicted from her townhouse and she and Sheba moved in with her mother, living off cash advances from credit cards.
