Les spoke candidly to the Scottish Sun in the wake of the news about how supportive his wife had been, saying: “Peko’s an incredible woman. There have been times when she’s forgiven me for cheating with other women. I think this has been harder.

“This gay thing has been really hard for her to confront.

“She has been a big rock holding the family together and I’m really lucky to have her.”

Peko is yet to issue any kind of public statement since her husband’s death, but fans gained an insight into how she was coping via the band’s former manager John MacLaughlan, who told the Daily Record: “I’m very sad and shocked and so is Peko, his wife.

“She is heartbroken and called me from Les’ phone with the news. I picked up and thought it was Les wanting a chat.”

Les often spoke at length about his adoration of wife Peko and how she responded to numerous controversies that he was embroiled in.

Speaking to Starsat60, the singer said: “God know why she’s put up with me for this long, she could have kicked my arse right out the door a long time ago.”

He continued “We went through a bit of a rough patch but then we got back together again and everything is good now, I don’t want to change things round in my life now. I met her in 1978 and we’ve been going out ever since, how long is that?”

McKeown’s family announced his death via the band’s Facebook page today and shared that he died suddenly at home on Tuesday. A message penned by his family on the page read: “It is with profound sadness that we announce the death of our beloved husband and father Leslie Richard McKeown.”

“Leslie died suddenly at home on Tuesday 20 April 2021.

“We are currently making arrangements for his funeral.”

The announcement then encouraged fans to make a donation if they wished to remember the rocker before ending: “We thank you and ask for privacy after the shock of our profound loss. Thank you. Keiko and Jubei McKeown.”

The sad news was illustrated with a selfie of Les beaming.

Below the post fans rushed to share their condolences following the loss of the Scottish native – who was the lead singer of the iconic 70s boyband. One lover typed: “No words – this is so sad. Many thanks for the music and memories and much love and deepest condolences to Keiko and Jubei. RIP.”

A second echoed: “so sad, rip and thank you for the music, you made my teenage years special.”

Others added: “So shocked to be reading this. Les was my childhood hero and have been so excited to have seen him so many times over the last few years. RIP Les thoughts are with his family at this very sad time xxx” and “So very sad to hear this news.”

“He was the music of my generation. I’ve been blessed to see him perform 3 times in recent years. Condolences to his family.”

The family has not disclosed the cause of death.

In recent years Les toured with his band Bay City Rollers featuring Les McKeown, recreating some of the band’s top hits.
