Narelle Fiona Smith is a woman who is allegedly accused of murdering her elderly neighbour has protested her innocence while being led away by police in handcuffs. Smith was arrested by officers at a unit block in Sydney’s east and charged over the death of 77-year-old Peter McCarthy.

Mr. McCarthy was found dead in his Elphinstone Road, South Coogee home on December 20 with severe head and facial injuries. Homicide detectives returned to the street on Monday afternoon and arrested Smith in a unit next to Mr. McCarthy’s home.

Narelle Fiona Smith: ‘I didn’t do this, Peter was my friend’

Media were there at the time of the arrest, with Narelle Fiona Smith telling a Nine News reporter: ‘Peter was my friend. I was there on my birthday.’

She claimed she had nothing to do with Mr McCarthy’s death. ‘No, not at all. I wouldn’t do that, he’s my friend,’ she said.

Mr McCarthy’s last confirmed sighting was at The York Club in the Sydney CBD on December 16, with his ex-wife discovering his body four days later. Police would not say when they believe he was fatally assaulted.

Mr McCarthy’s family remain in contact with detectives and were informed of the woman’s arrest.

‘I think it’s mixed emotions for them,’ Detective Superintendent Danny Doherty said.

‘They’ve just gone through Christmas without a father and a grandfather.

‘They’re still getting over the grief of losing Peter.’

Mr McCarthy’s neighbour Michelle Turneley said: ‘Peter was a nice old guy, and he was very frail’.

Det Supt Doherty said ‘there’s very significant forensic and physical evidence to make this a strong and compelling case’.

‘Mr McCarthy suffered severe head and facial injuries but I won’t go into circumstances of what was used,’ he said.

What we know so far about Narelle Fiona Smith

In December, Det Supt Doherty said the post-mortem examination and crime scene suggested Mr McCarthy was the victim of a ‘violent and brutal’ assault and robbery. His satchel and phone had also been stolen from his home.

Narelle Fiona Smith has been charged with murder and a fraud offence.

She was refused bail ahead of an appearance at Waverley Local Court on Tuesday.
