Who was Mark York?

Mark York was an American actor who was best known for portraying Billy Merchant in seasons one and two of ‘The Office’. He was widely known for A Bridge Too Far (1977), The Greatest American Hero (1981) and Henry VIII and His Six Wives (1972).

According to TMZ, Mark passed away last week at Miami Valley Hospital in Ohio, however, while his exact cause of death has not been revealed yet.

York was raised in Ohio and graduated from Arcanum High School. After graduating with three majors from Anderson University, he was encouraged to move to California in order to pursue a career in acting. An avid TV and movie fan, the actor picked up a series of television roles on different shows.

He also had an uncredited role in Steven Spielberg’s “A.I. Artificial Intelligence.”

Mark, who grew up in Ohio, had been focusing on his work as an inventor, and according to the outlet had already secured two patents for his inventions. “He always tried to look at what he could accomplish and do, not what he couldn’t do,” the actor’s obit reads. ”

He had experienced many travel opportunities and many dreams for the future.  In the past several years, he had been working as an inventor, and had obtained two patents for his inventions.” Mark was a paraplegic since 1988 after he was involved in an automobile accident.

He started his acting career with small TV roles, including a part in ‘CSI: New York’ in 2004 as well as ‘Fighting Words’ in 2007.

His role in the much-loved show ‘The Office’ really reeled in fans, especially due to his fantastic comedic delivery. His commendable performance occurred on a Season 2 episode titled ‘The Injury’ which has Steve Carell’s Michael Scott inviting Mark’s character to talk about people with disabilities.

Mark was very vocal about raising money and awareness to find a cure for paralysis. He once told Dayton Daily News how the cast and crew of ‘The Office’ was all about his efforts: “The line producer, Randy Cordray, approved a ‘set visit’ for our foundation to be able to raffle off as a prize in order to bring in the needed funding to cure paralysis. Steve Carell even suggested that we (he) shoot a PSA right there on the set of The Office.

Also, Oscar Nunez verbalized to me that he is open to being included in it as well.”

York is survived by his mother, Becky; father, Glenn; three brothers, Brian, Jeff and David; and numerous aunts, uncles, cousins, relatives and friends.

The Office Actor Dies

Mark York, the actor best known for playing Billy Merchant in “The Office,” has died. He was 55 years old.

The actor’s first appearance as Billy Merchant on “The Office” was during its second season when Michael Scott brings him into the office for a disability-awareness meeting. Billy was the property manager of the Scranton Business Park up until Dwight buys it from him at the end of the sixth season.

Following a brief and unexpected illness, York died early in the morning on May 19 at the Miami Valley Hospital in Ohio.

The Montgomery County Coroner’s Office confirmed his death, although the exact cause of death has not been disclosed. York, who has been a paraplegic since 1988, did not allow his disability to prevent him from having “an outgoing, uplifting, positive attitude and personality.”

One person remembered him on Twitter saying: “Oh no. Guy was a legendary character in Dwights concussion episode.

“The moonface kid with the concussion”” While one said, “RIP Mark York aka Billy Merchant :(”
