Luca Attanasio was an Italian diplomat, who served as the ambassador to the Democratic Republic of the Congo from 2017 until his death in February 2021. The Italian ambassador graduated with honors at the Luigi Bocconi Commercial University in 2001. He started his diplomatic career in 2003, at the Farnesina, as Directorate for Economic Affairs, Business Support Office, and then to the secretariat of the Directorate General for Africa.
Attanasio started his diplomatic career outside Italy in 2006, serving as the Economic and Commercial Office at the Italian Embassy. In 2015, he returned to Africa as the first counselor at the Italian embassy in Abuja, Nigeria. In 2017, he was was head of mission in Kinshasa, Democratic Republic of Congo.

Ambassador Luca Attanasio Killed in Congo
Italy’s ambassador to the Democratic Republic of Congo has been killed during an attempted kidnap, according to reports. The Italian foreign ministry said Luca Attanasio, a carabinieri police officer who was providing security for him and a third person were killed in Goma.
They were traveling in a UN convoy in Congo but the ministry provided no other details. An Italian military policeman, Vittorio Iacovacci and an unnamed Congolese driver who was working for the UN’s World Food Programme also died.

Luca Attanasio Dead
The Reuters news agency quoting a source from the Virunga National Park said the convoy was attacked during a kidnap attempt near the town of Kanyamahoro at around 10.15 am local time (8.15 am GMT). The park had said earlier that two people in the convoy had been killed and the 43-year-old ambassador wounded.
It was not immediately clear who was behind the attack. There was no immediate claim of responsibility. Italian newspaper La Repubblica said Virunga rangers immediately launched an operation to free him but he was found dead. His body was taken to the hospital in Goma.
