Laura Natalya Rodriguez is identified as a college student who was accidentally shot by an 18-year-old college student, which resulted in her death. The Houston Police Department responded to the scene on the 100 block of Wellington Street in north Houston at around 1 pm after getting calls of a deceased woman.

Officers shared during a news briefing that the man had been showing his sister – identified as Rodriguez – a new gun when the firearm went off and hit the woman in her neck.

Laura Natalya Rodriguez was pronounced dead at the scene, ABC 13 reports. There was an older sibling in the home who tried to administer CPR and called 911, police shared.

‘It’s a tragic situation for the entire family, and our thoughts and prayers are with them,’ HPD Sgt. Matthew Brady said.

The family has launched a GoFundMe to help pay for funeral expenses for Rodriguez. It has raised just under $17,000 of its $10,000 goal.

“Laura “Natalya”, known to family, has moved on to be with our maker.  It seems that the best ones are needed in heaven.  Age 19, Senior at Syracuse University, lived abroad in Madrid for her first semester, traveled around Italy, embraced the world with open arms.  Her favorite place to be was Disney World.  Loved to laugh and have fun.  No one is ever prepared, so close to Christmas, we are asking for your help with funeral arrangements and services.  All help is greatly appreciated.  God bless you.

Her family shared that her ‘favorite place to be was Disney World’ and that she ‘loved to laugh and have fun.’
