Kiara Hawkins was 19 years old at the time of her death.
What happened to Kezzie Childs, Raymond Childs and their family?
On Sunday, investigators remained on the scene of the city’s largest ‘mass casualty’ shooting in a decade for more than 10 hours. Once the scene cleared in the 3500 block of Adams Street, family and friends showed up with more questions than answers.
Just after 8 p.m., the Marion County Coroner’s Office identified the victims, after next of kin was notified.
The victims have been identified as 42-year-old Kezzie Childs, 42-year-old Raymond Childs, 18-year-old Elijah Childs, 13-year-old Rita Childs, 19-year-old Kiara Hawkins, and Baby Boy Hawkins, the unborn child of Kiara Hawkins.
One of the five victims was a pregnant woman who was taken to an area hospital, where both she and the unborn child died despite life-saving efforts, Foley said. Their 8-year-old son Elijah Childs and daughter Rita Childs, 13, were also among those fatally shot.
Kiara Hawkins Facebook
Kiara Hawkins was shot in an Indianapolis home along with her family. Her Facebook account has not been found yet.
Responding officers were alerted to the horrific scene when they found an injured young man – the only survivor – less than a half-mile away from where the five bodies lay inside a house.
Sergeant Shane Foley of the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department confirmed the identities of the victims who were shot at around 4am in the early hours of yesterday morning, reported the Indianapolis Star.
Who is the shooter?
Police have not named the shooter yet. No arrests have been made. If you know anything call Crime Stoppers at 262-TIPS.
However, IMPD Police Chief Randal Taylor says police think the victims were targeted deliberately by one killer or a group after a surge of shootings across the city. He added: “What we saw this morning was a different kind of evil.
“What happened this morning, based on the evidence that’s been gathered so far, was mass murder. More than that, it was not random.”
What neighbors say about the mass shooting
“This morning, I heard four shots fired. I peeped out, didn’t see anything,” said neighbor Rivon Allen- Bailey.
But the neighbor in the home directly across from the scene says she didn’t hear anything either.
“Well, they knocked on my door at 5, the police. Asked did I hear anything, I said no,” said neighbor Vicki Pinkston.
At that point, Pinkston was informed of a shooting at her neighbor’s house but didn’t know else further.
