Kevin Peterson Jr was a black Portland protestor who was allegedly shot and killed by sheriff’s deputies just outside the city Thursday night during a protest in Vancouver, Washington. His body was left in the street until the early hours of Friday morning, with cops moving his car from the scene.

The killing of Peterson has sent shockwaves through the Pacific north-west on Friday and threatened to increase tensions in the region around Portland, Oregon, where protesters against racial injustice have clashed repeatedly with rightwing groups.  Gunshots were reported around midnight Saturday.

Peterson was a football player at Union High School in Vancouver, Washington. He loved sports of any kind and was a big personality who was liked by everyone at school, his friend Jake Thompson said.

Peterson has a girlfriend, who is the mother of his child Kailiah D. Peterson.

Jake Thompson, a high school acquaintance of Peterson, said he took photos at the wedding of Peterson’s parents in Portland in 2018. On Friday, he posted a black-and-white photo of Peterson.

Clark County Sheriff’s Office confirmed hours later its deputies had been involved in a shooting near the 6800 block of NE Highway 99, in the Hazel Dell area of the city.

It is still unclear why officers got involved in the shooting, which led to Peterson’s death. However, Clark County Sheriff’s Office deputies received reports of a ‘contact suspect’ at 5:29 p.m. in the US Bank parking lot in Hazel Dell, according to The Oregonian.

According to witnesses present during the shooting, several shots were fired at Peterson before 6 pm. He died at the moment and was not taken to hospital, left lying in the street for 12 hours.

The circumstances around Peterson’s death are still unclear.

What the witnesses say

Many witnesses said that officers prioritized moving his vehicle over Peterson’s dead body.

One witness named Dan said he saw a black man with his hands in his pocket in the parking lot, looking worried’ and ‘really scared’ before multiple police cruisers sped along the road and pulled up.

Another witness, named Taylor Lappier, said he saw ‘roughly 25 officers wielding guns and/or riot shields’ at the scene, including officers with Vancouver Police.

Another, Joseph Webster, said he was at work at a business over the road when he heard tires screeching in the bank parking lot.  He said he then saw Peterson running away before hearing cops fire many times.

What Kevin Peterson Jr’s family says

A woman named Marquis thought to be Peterson’s sister described on social media:

“Feds ain’t even tellin US on the scene what happened. We haven’t even been able to see my f***n brother,” she wrote on Twitter.

Marquis told Newsweek around 4 a.m. it was ‘almost 12 hours later from it all happening and… [police] haven’t said anything to us.’

“They say the body is still in the street; has been since 6 pm. It’s almost 1 am,” Mac Smiff wrote over Twitter.

Peterson’s girlfriend claimed she was on the phone with her boyfriend, who was running scared, at 5:55 p.m. during the shooting and heard shots fired before his last words “I love you”.

A vigil was planned for Friday evening in Vancouver, Washington, by the NAACP chapter.

In Hazel Dell, more than a dozen Black Lives Matter protesters lined a busy street on Friday in front of the US Bank parking lot where Peterson died, with signs reading, “Honk for Black lives”.

Updates So Far

Peterson’s father, Kevin Peterson, told Oregon Live he arrived at the scene about 6 p.m. but ‘did not get a chance to identify my son’ until 5:30 a.m. Friday morning. He revealed his son was a good kid who didn’t have a criminal history nor any clash with police before.

A Glock model 23, 40-caliber pistol near the site where Peterson was killed, KOIN-TV of Portland reported.

The officers involved in the shooting were placed on administrative leave.
