Karen Leek is named as the Victorian greyhound trainer who was allegedly murdered in a pool of her own blood on Tuesday, May 26 by her heavily pregnant niece, Jessie Moore, according to police. Her suspect killer has reportedly been charged with murder.

Leek was 69 years old at the time of death.

Ms Leek started her career at greyhound training and racing when she was only 13 and went on to be a leading pioneer in the sport.

She had also helped breed some of Australia’s superstar greyhounds including Bewildering, Moreira and Nolen.

Jessie Moore Had Been Living With Karen Leek

Jessie Moore and her five-year-old daughter had been living with Ms Leek, who assisted with childcare.

At the time of her death, Ms Leek had been living and caring for her five-year-old great niece.

The 69-year-old was last seen alive about 5 pm last Monday – 17 hours before her body was discovered.

Young heavily pregnant Moore is eight days away from giving birth and didn’t want to come up from the cells, her lawyer told Melbourne Magistrates Court on Thursday.

She was interviewed over Leek’s death a week ago. However, she was charged with murder on Thursday.

Homicide detectives spent more than 30 hours combing the home for clues and a police helicopter was also used to examine the property. Police are probing the circumstances of Ms Leek’s child care situation as part of their investigation into her death, The Herald Sun reported.

Another friend, who is also the chair of Greyhound Racing Victoria, said the industry had been ‘rocked’ by Ms Leek’s death.

“She was an amazing person, it’s such a massive loss for us”, Peita Duncan told Nine News.
