Who is James Cassidy?

James Cassidy is the father of Samuel Cassidy, the suspect who allegedly shot dead eight people at a California light rail yard on Wednesday suffered from bipolar and was ‘not mentally stable’, according to two ex-girlfriends. He opened fire at the Valley Transportation Authority yard in Santa Clara shortly before 7 am before he turned the gun on himself.  He worked in maintenance at VTA and his eight victims were all co-workers, police have confirmed.

Their names have not been released. According to officers, Cassidy set fire to his own home before carrying out the rampage

Officials have not revealed a motive for the mass shooting.

However, on Wednesday afternoon, a former partner of Cassidy’s spoke with NBC Bay Area, claiming he suffered from mental health issues.

How old is James Cassidy?

James Cassidy is 88 years old as of the year 2021.

James Cassidy Father

Cassidy’s father James Cassidy, 88, answered the phone to Wednesday and said: ‘I’m sorry, I don’t know what he might have been going through.’  He told The Daily Beast his son ‘seemed completely himself’ before the shooting, adding:

‘He didn’t talk about his job or politics. I just found out he was dead and his house on fire and all that a minute ago.’

Law enforcement on Wednesday worked to piece together what led a nine-year rail company worker to open fire on fellow employees at a light rail yard and whether a pair of fires, including one at the suspected gunman’s home, was linked to the deadly rampage.

The suspected gunman, identified as Samuel J. Cassidy started firing rounds sometime around 6:30 a.m. local time. He shot and killed eight people before ending his own life at the Santa Clara Valley Transportation Authority (VTA) light rail hub, which provides bus, light rail, and other transit services throughout Santa Clara County — the most populated county in the Bay Area.

The facility includes a transit-control center, parking for trains, and a maintenance yard.

At the same time, authorities were investigating two fires that erupted around the same time and place as the shooting — including a blaze at the suspected gunman’s home — and whether the fires were connected to the shooting.

San Jose Shooting Samuel Cassidy

As droves of law enforcement responded to the attack at the VTA, fire crews were responding to two blazes nearby. The first call the San Jose Fire Department got was at 6:29 a.m. about a blaze at a lumber business — just minutes before calls started coming in about a shooting at the VTA about five miles away.

By Wednesday afternoon, a handful of firefighters were still outside the building spraying down the charred remains. Workers at a nearby business told USA TODAY others in the area heard noises early Wednesday morning that sounded like fireworks right before the blaze erupted.

Minutes after the shooting was reported, the fire department was called at 6:36 a.m. about a fire at a two-story house owned by Cassidy.

San Jose Mayor Sam Liccardo said that it appeared the gunman set the fire on his way to the worksite.

Samuel James Cassidy Footage

Footage captured by news helicopters showed law enforcement sifting through debris in the backyard of the beige home throughout the afternoon. The back of the home appeared to have the most visible damage with the roof charred and debris were thrown in the yard.

No one was injured in either of the fires and both grew to two-alarm blazes before they were put out by fire crews, San Jose Fire Chief Robert Sapien Jr. said at a news conference, noting the three back-to-back incidents drained his department’s resources and personnel.

Samuel James Cassidy VTA

On Wednesday, the first reports of gunfire at the VTA light rail yard came at around 6:30 am local time.

Cassidy had worked for the VTA since at least 2012, according to the public payroll and pension database known as Transparent California. His position from 2012 to 2014 was listed as a mechanic. After that, he was a substation maintainer, the records said.

Last year, he earned a salary of $102,000, plus benefits and $20,000 in overtime, the records showed.

Local television station KTVU-TV reported that Cassidy had been married for 10 years and divorced in 2019, citing an interview with his ex-wife, who reportedly told the station she had little contact with him over the past decade.

Samuel Cassidy Girlfriends

The ex – who has not been named – told NBC Bay Area

She said Cassidy turned on her when she rejected his marriage proposal, telling him she didn’t want to rush into a wedding.

‘I was scared… I turned him down and he turned totally different,’ she stated. ‘He was angry, screaming, [he stole] my car.’

The ex also added that Cassidy said his job at VTA was ‘stressful and that he ‘complained about his boss’.

Meanwhile, The San Francisco Chronicle reports that another ex-girlfriend of Cassidy’s filed court documents against him back in 2009.

In the documents, the woman accuses him of repeatedly trying to pressure her into having anal sex and of raping her once in 2008.  The woman further alleged Cassidy ‘had major mood swings as a result of bipolar disorder, which worsened when he drank large amounts of alcohol’.

Samuel Cassidy Wife

his ex-wife described him as having “two sides” and having anger issues.

Cecilia Nelms, who was married to Cassidy for about 10 years before they filed for divorce in 2005, told The Mercury News he often was angry at co-workers and about his assignments at work. She told the outlet Cassidy thought the VTA was unfair with its work assignments.

“He had two sides,” Nelms told The Mercury News. “When he was in a good mood he was a great guy. When he was mad, he was mad.”

Another woman who dated Cassidy filed a restraining order against him in 2009, accusing him of rape and sexual assault. The filing, obtained by The Mercury News, also includes accusations that Cassidy had severe mood swings and suffered from alcohol abuse.
