Jamar Mackey wrongfully arrested at a shopping mall
On Tuesday, Jamar Mackey spoke out to ABC News about the arrest for the first time on Monday.
“Basically we’re just sitting down enjoying the holidays trying to get some lunch with my family, and next thing you know, I’m in handcuffs. No words, no explanations. How is it nothing’s changed? How is everything still the same how do you still racially profile a Black man with dreads that way in 2020?”
Mackey and his family were visiting the Lynnhaven Mall in Virginia Beach on December 19 when an officer approached him and without explanation, put him in handcuffs, only to say that he wanted to speak with him outside. Mackey was walked out of the mall while protesting that he was not the intended suspect.
A few minutes into the incident, police realized they had the wrong person and explained that they thought Mackey fit the description of someone who was suspected of using stolen credit cards. The incident was captured on camera by Mackey’s fiancée, but there was no bodycam footage.

What Jamar Mackey viral video shows
Video of the arrest first shared on Facebook over the weekend, has now been viewed tens of thousands of times. The viral clips start with Mackie sitting at a food court table, with a full meal spread out in front of him, before he is approached and handcuffed by a police officer.
TMZ reported that an officer put handcuffs on Mackey without explaining what he was doing first.
A woman – believed to be Mackey’s fiancee – can be heard asking what the police officers are doing, saying that the family just arrived at the mall.
Mackey does not struggle with police as he is escorted outside, but he does repeatedly ask ‘Are you serious right now?’ and references Black Lives Matter.
After nearly three minutes, the police realize that they don’t have the person they’re looking for and remove the handcuffs while explaining that they were acting on a report that a black male with dreads, wearing all black, in the company of a boy wearing red, had been using stolen credit cards at the mall.
