Hyon Song Wol is a North Korean pop singer and politician, well known for her appearances with Kim Jong-un. She is the leading member of the Moranbong Band and of the Samjiyon Orchestra, music bands.
Hyon, who enjoyed chart success with hits including Excellent Horse-Like Lady, I Love Pyongyang and She is a Discharged Soldier, appears to have taken on duties previously performed by the leader’s younger sister, Kim Yo-jong. She has frequently accompanied Kim on official trips and a military parade this month.

Source from South Korean government sources reveals that Hyon and Kim Jong-un had been romantically involved in the early 2000s but the relationship fell off after the disapproval of Kim’s father.
In July 2012, heavily pregnant Hyon was identified by South Korean intelligence officials as a woman sitting next to Kim Jong-un at a musical performance. However, North Korean television announced that the woman was in fact Kim Jong-un’s wife, Ri Sol-Ju, and not Hyon.

On 29 August 2013, The Chosun Ilbo reported that Hyon had been executed by firing squad on the orders of Kim Jong-un along with eleven other performers, who had made illegal pornographic videos.
Pyongyang’s state news agency KCNA denied claims that the singer was executed, and a Japanese news magazine reported that she was seen on North Korean television participating in the National Convention of Artist on 16 May 2014.

Hyon Song Wol has previously been seen at the dictator’s side – apparently assuming some of the duties performed by Kim’s powerful younger sister Kim Yo Jong.
Since Kim’s sister and wife have not been seen publicly, Kim has taken on a more public policy role, cementing Hyon’s status as an influential political player in her own right.
She joined the central committee of the ruling Workers’ Party of Korea, which is chaired by Kim.

Hyon was seen on the October 10 military parade marking the 75th anniversary of the Workers’ Party of Korea guiding dignitaries to their seats, grabbing flowers handed to Kim and standing behind him.
