Who was Gloria Foster?

Gloria Foster was an American actress who was widely known as the wife of Clarence Williams III who was considered a Black power icon in the 1960s and ’70s. She was best known for her rules in In White America and Having Our Say. She and Clarence also worked together on The Mod Squad.

She gained much fame after she portrayed major characters in The Matrix, The Matrix Reloaded andThe Atlanta Child Murders.

Born November 15, 1933, Gloria was raised in Chicago, Illinois. As a kid, she was put into the custody of her maternal grandparents.

She never knew who her father was and she moved to Janesville, Wisconsin after her mother was hospitalized for a mental illness. She attended the University of Illinois at Chicago, where she participated in plays but did not focus on acting. She decided to be a professional actor after being inspired by her godmother.

Her first role was Ruth in the show A Raisin in the Sun. Her first professional performance was In White America.

Foster, “plays [s] a 13-year-old Arkansas girl who tries to enter her Little Rock school”. She was known for her work with Joe Papp and appeared in his productions of Long Day’s Journey into Night, Chekhov’s Cherry Orchard, Brecht’s Mother Courage, and Shakespeare’s Coriolanus.

Foster married the actor Clarence Williams III in 1967. They appeared on an episode of Williams’s television show The Mod Squad that ran from 1968 to 1973; Foster made two guest appearances. The two acted together in a 1964 movie, The Cool World. Williams was the one to announce her death in 2001.

While Foster did not have many close relatives, she stayed in contact with her Delta Sigma Theta sorority sister, Cicely Tyson.

Tyson stated that, although they did not see each other often, their telephone conversations would often last for hours.

In 1984 they filed for divorce but remained friends. They had no children. Williams is now survived by his sister Sondra Pugh, daughter Jamey Phillips, niece Suyin Shaw, grandnephews Elliot Shaw and Ese Shaw, and grandniece Azaria Verdin.

Gloria Foster died on September 29, 2001, at age 67. The cause of her death was diabetes.

A memorial was held at Cypress Hills Cemetery in Brooklyn on October 15, 2001. Martin Duberman, the author of In White America, told the audience that:

“she embodied it. At the end of the scene each night, there were tears streaming down her face, her body was trembling, but her dignity was intact … Foster had to be covered with blankets in order to calm her shaking”. She is interred in Kensico Cemetery in Valhalla, New York.

Clarence Williams III Cause of Death

Williams breathed his last on Friday, June 4 at age 81.

The unfortunate news was shared by the actor’s management to the publication Variety over the weekend, citing colon cancer as the cause behind his death. The management team of Williams did not reveal a lot of details about the actor’s death except that he died from colon cancer.

Williams was best known for portraying Linc Hayes on the hippie cop show ‘The Mod Squad’ and Prince’s father in the movie ‘Purple Rain’.  His other notable roles came in projects such as ‘52 Pick-Up’, ‘Tales from the Hood’, ‘Half Baked’ and ‘Reindeer Games’, and Season 2 of ‘Twin Peaks.

It is also believed that his family or his team never made the news of him suffering from cancer public.

Williams was also one of the first Black actors to lead a TV series with ‘The Mob Squad’ that ran from 1968 to 1973.
