Donovon Lynch Virginia Beach Shooting
Donovan Lynch was in one of three separate incidents being investigated within minutes of each other in the city’s Oceanfront area. Virginia Beach Police officials, in statements on the department webpage, said that it was not known if Lynch’s death was connected to two other shooting incidents in the area.
Lynch was killed at the hands of police as officers responded to a gunfight they said erupted while they were dealing with another, unrelated shooting nearby. Police said they faced “three separate shooting events” along the city’s oceanfront on Friday night.
Donovon Lynch Dead
Before Lynch was identified by police as the victim of an officer-involved shooting, an initial press release described the man killed as “an armed citizen.” But Neudigate openly admitted late Saturday that authorities do not actually know if Lynch was armed.
An unidentified Virginia Beach Police spokesman, during a Saturday press conference broadcast on local television station WAVY, said the officer who shot Lynch did not have their body camera activated.
He said that it was a department “expectation” that officers responding to calls turn on their body cameras.
Donovon Lynch Death
“UVA Wise is saddened to hear of the death of alumnus Donovon Lynch,” UVA Wise Communications Director and spokesperson Kathy Still said Saturday. “I know the investigation is ongoing, and our hearts are broken for his family during this time.”
“His former classmates remember him as a kind man who deeply cared for his friends and family,” Still said. “He is fondly remembered as a supporter of intramurals on campus. He made a huge difference during his time at UVA Wise.”
Virginia Beach Shooting Update
The spokesperson said it was not known why the officer’s camera was off during the incident and that it would be the subject of an administrative investigation following the criminal investigation being done by the Virginia Beach commonwealth’s attorney’s office.
The spokesperson also said that a weapon was found “in the vicinity” of the shooting.
Asked if Lynch’s officer-involved death would be turned over to the Virginia State Police, the spokesperson said doing so would raise concerns of “evidence preservation” and would keep the department from responding directly to community questions.
The department has arrested three individuals from the first shooting, 22-year-old Ahmon Jahree Adams of Chesapeake, Virginia, 18-year-old Nyquez Tyyon Baker of Virginia Beach and 20-year-old Devon Maurice Dorsey Jr of Virginia Beach.
